World Religions in Istanbul

8 Days

Istanbul, Türkiye

Discover the religious diversity of Istanbul, a city that has been a crossroads for faiths, empires, and cultures for centuries. This course delves into the significance of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism in shaping the city’s rich spiritual and cultural landscape. Explore the Hagia Sophia, once a Byzantine church, later a Catholic cathedral, and now a mosque—an emblem of Istanbul’s layered history. Visit the Blue Mosque, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, and the Neve Shalom Synagogue, symbolizing the resilience of Istanbul’s Jewish community.

Through site visits, lectures, and discussions, you’ll examine the city’s role as a central figure in the Crusades and Ottoman Empire, where religions met, merged, and sometimes clashed. Engage with local scholars and religious leaders who offer insights into how interfaith dialogues are evolving today. By exploring rituals, beliefs, and practices, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the shared traditions that connect these faiths and the distinct ways they shape Istanbul’s unique identity.

This course provides an unparalleled view into how religion continues to influence Istanbul, offering a rare perspective on spiritual coexistence and cultural complexity.

Extracurriculars

Your Facilitator will organize two optional activities during your free afternoons or evenings. Details and costs for these Electives will be provided one month in advance, and if you choose to participate, we will handle the booking. For outings such as concerts, performances, or tastings, your Facilitator will accompany you to the event.

In addition to these optional advance bookings, your Facilitator and your Instructor will provide a wide variety of suggested activities and restaurants for during your Self-Guided Study and free time.

Extracurriculars for this course may include:

Turkish Wine Tasting: Long before Bordeaux or Tuscany, the lands of present-day Türkiye were home to some of the world’s earliest winemakers. The Hittites, Assyrians, and Hellenes cultivated vines here, shaping traditions that influenced Mediterranean viticulture. From Greek mythology to Byzantine rituals, wine held a sacred role in ceremonies and daily life. Discover Türkiye’s diverse terroir, the influence of ancient techniques, and its flourishing modern wine industry.

Live Music: Istanbul’s music scene is as diverse as its history, blending influences from Ottoman classical, Anatolian folk, jazz, rock, and contemporary global sounds. From intimate meyhanes to vibrant modern venues, live music pulses through the city in spaces that are as atmospheric as the performances themselves. Whether in a centuries-old setting or a cutting-edge club, an evening of live music in Istanbul offers a glimpse into the city’s ever-evolving cultural heartbeat.

Bosphorus Cruise: Istanbul’s unique position straddling Europe and Asia is best appreciated from the water. A cruise along the Bosphorus Strait offers a sweeping perspective of the city’s layered history, where Ottoman palaces, Byzantine fortresses, and modern skylines rise along the shores. As the strait connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, this journey reveals Istanbul as a city shaped by its geography—a meeting point of empires, cultures, and continents.

Guided Visit of Istanbul’s Bazaars & Antique Shops: Istanbul’s bazaars and antique shops are windows into the city’s past, where Ottoman, Byzantine, and Silk Road influences converge. The Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest covered markets, remains a hub of craftsmanship, while antique shops scattered through the city hold remnants of Istanbul’s layered history—old maps, calligraphy, textiles, and artifacts that reflect its place at the crossroads of empires. Explore bustling market halls and quiet backstreets, seeing how these spaces preserve the city’s long tradition of trade and artistry.

What to Expect

Many US cities fly direct to Istanbul Airport (IST), or you can transfer through a European hub. From the airport, it is easy to get a taxi to the hotel, or let us know if you would like us to book a car for you in advance.

  • The best way to get around Istanbul is via its extensive and easy-to-use network of trams, subways, trains, and ferries.

Taxis can be found, but due to traffic can often take much longer than public transport.

Expect to walk quite a bit, including during Field Seminars. Parts of the city are hilly and some streets are paved with cobblestones.

  • Early September in Istanbul is generally dry, with temperatures ranging from high 70s / low 80s during the day to low 60s at night.

  • Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (abbreviated as TL and familiarly called tele).

Most shops and businesses in the city accept credit cards, but you should carry some cash for small purchases and tips.

For cash exchange, the best option is to bring USD and convert it at local currency exchange centers for favorable rates.

Note that AMEX is less widely accepted than Visa and Mastercard.

  • Turkey is widely recognized to have very good medical care, with clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals throughout the city.

Travel insurance is mandatory for participation. Please reach out if you have questions about this or would like recommendations of providers.
